Competition Rules 2007 - 2008

EASTWOOD PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY
COMPETITION RULES AND
TROPHY ALLOCATION

1 GENERAL
1.1 It is expected that contemporary work should be submitted for all competitions including the Annual Exhibition of Prints and Slides.
1.2 Material entered for each competition must be new to that competition.
1.3 Trade or home processed prints and slides are acceptable to all Society competitions.
1.4 Any competition (Advanced and Novice) must have more than one entrant to be valid. If there is only one entry, this will be withdrawn from the competition by the Competition Secretary, but can be re-entered in a later round of the competition.
1.5 Any member (except for new members, who are exempt) wishing to enter the Annual Exhibition of Prints and Slides must have entered at least one of the earlier rounds of the print and slide competitions.

2 DEFINITIONS
2.1 An image with 2 or more colours (not including black & white) is classed as a colour entry for competition purposes.
2.2 An image with only one colour (not including black & white) is classed as a monochrome image.
2.3 An image with only black & white is classed as a black & white image.
2.4 A digital image is defined as input processed digitally whether by way of a digital camera or by scanning of film or film derived print.
N.B. A monochrome competition can include both mono and black & white images.

3 PRINT COMPETITIONS
3.1 Black & White, Monochrome and Colour prints are eligible.
3.2 The maximum print size is 16" by 12" (406x305mm). Note A3 size is 420x297mm).
3.3 Prints should be suitably mounted; minimum mount size 10” by 8” (254x203mm), maximum mount size 20" by 16" (508x406mm).
3.4 The title of the print and the author’s membership number with the prefix ‘N’ for Novice or ‘A’ for Advanced (as appropriate) shall be on the reverse side of the mounting board, correct way up.
3.5 A novice worker who wins the Annual Print competition becomes an advanced worker from the following season in both print and digital competitions.

4 DIGITAL COMPETITIONS
4.1 Images for this competition shall be produced as defined in Definition 2.4 and viewed by digital projection and/or computer monitor.
4.2 Black & White, Monochrome and Colour images are eligible.
4.3 Where used, borders will be taken as part of the image. Text e.g. title must not be entered in the border area.
4.4 All entries must have originated as a photograph/s taken by the entrant and the entrant must have made any subsequent digital manipulation. The final image must have significant photographic content.
4.5 All images must be submitted as a digital file by one of the following methods; DVD, CD or Memory Stick.
4.6 Each image file shall be identified in the following manner :-
“A” for advanced or “N” for novice; membership number; image number (00 to 10); title.
i.e. A061707 Flight of the bumble bee.
In this example the prefix A denotes an ‘Advanced’ worker whose membership number is 0617, the image number is 07 (ensure the zero is included for numbers between 1 and 9), followed by the image title.
4.7 All images shall be in sRGB colour space and JPEG format with all layers flattened or merged with a maximum horizontal dimension of 1024 pixels and a maximum vertical dimension of 768 pixels.
4.8 A novice worker who wins the Annual Digital competition becomes an advanced worker from the following season in digital and prints.

5 SLIDE COMPETITION
5.1 It is recommended that slides submitted for competitions should be in glass mounts.
5.2 Slides from film and/or digital originals are eligible for all slide competitions.
5.3 Slides must be correctly spotted for projection. (Looking at the slide, right way up, the spot should be on the bottom left hand corner.)
5.4 Slides must be titled and show the authors current membership number.

6 ADVANCED/NOVICE STATUS
6.1 The status of a new member will be confirmed by the committee upon joining the Society.
6.2 The committee may ask for details of previous work and submissions to other competitions or organisations and the results to assist them.
6.3 If necessary, the committee may ask for a portfolio of work to be submitted for consideration.
6.4 Promotion to the Advanced section will be by winning the appropriate Novice section of the Print or Digital Annual Competitions.
6.5 Members wishing to proceed to the Advanced section may submit a portfolio of their work to the committee, for their consideration.
This portfolio should consist of ten slides, ten prints or ten digital images, eight of which must be of ‘advanced’ standard.
The work should meet the usual competition rules.

TROPHY ALLOCATION SEASON 2007- 2008

ANNUAL PRINT COMPETITION – 3 ROUNDS
Novice and advanced workers compete separately.
Maximum of 5 submissions per round.
A winner will be declared for each round.
Overall winners (Novice and Advanced) shall be those with the highest aggregate score of their best 10 submissions.

ANNUAL DIGITAL COMPETITION – 3 ROUNDS
Novice and advanced workers compete separately.
Maximum of 5 submissions per round.
A winner will be declared for each round.
Overall winners (Novice and Advanced) shall be those with the highest aggregate score of their best 10 submissions.

SLIDE COMPETITION
Open competition for both Novice and Advanced workers.
Maximum of 10 submissions.
Best image wins the competition.

PEOPLE AND FACES COMPETITION
Open competition for both Novice and Advanced workers.
Prints or slides are accepted or any combination up to a maximum of 3.
Submissions must be images of either people or faces.
Highest aggregate score wins the competition.
Winner TWEEDIE QUAICH

SET SUBJECT
Open competition for both Novice and Advanced workers.
Maximum of 3 submissions.
Prints or slides are accepted or any combination up to a maximum of 3.
Submissions must be images depicting the set subject.
Highest aggregate score wins the competition.
Winner MORTON PLATE

ANNUAL EXHIBITION OF PRINTS
Novice and Advanced workers compete separately.
Maximum of 5 prints.
New or previously used prints in the current year on any subject can be used.
Highest aggregate score wins the competition.

ANNUAL EXHIBITION OF DIGITAL IMAGES
Novice and Advanced workers compete separately.
Maximum of 5 images.
New or previously used images in the current year on any subject can be used
Highest aggregate score wins the competition.

POINTS CHAMPIONSHIP (OVERALL CHAMPIONSHIP)
Novice and Advanced workers compete separately.
The member with the highest total of points scored over all seven club competitions will be the winner.
